One of my all time favorite meals is my family’s meatball and gravy recipe.
Every time I go home or for the holidays, I hope my mom makes it.
Having my parents in town now, my mom made this meal one night for dinner last week and I decided to photograph it all so I could share the recipe with all of you.
Here’s how to make it:
-Prep Time: 30 mins
–Total Time: 1 hr and 30 mins.
Ingredients:
For Meatballs:
-1 lb. ground pork
-1 lb. ground beef
-2 small garlic gloves
-1/2 of a medium onion
-3 eggs
-1/3 cups bread crumbs
-1/3 cup or 1 pkg of onion soup mix
-1/4 teaspoon pepper
-Crisco
-Flour
For Gravy:
-1 can of Cream of Mushroom Soup
-1 can of Cream of Chicken Soup
-Browning and Seasoning Sauce
Make it:
In a food processor, finely chop the onion and garlic gloves.
In a large bowl, place both meats, chopped onion and garlic, eggs, bread crumbs, pepper, and onion soup mix.
Mix together.
All mixed and ready to form meatballs.
-In a large skillet, melt 5 heaping tablespoons of Crisco.
-In another bowl, place some flour to dredge the meatballs in.
-Loosely form meatballs, just larger than a golf ball.
-Roll in the flour.
-Place the meatballs in the skillet to brown.
-Fill entire skillet.
-While your meatballs are browning, place the cream of mushroom and cream of chicken soup along with a can of water in a pot and whisk together.
-Add the browning sauce until you get your desired color of gravy.
-Cook the gravy on low heat stirring frequently so it doesn’t burn.
– Brown the meatballs for 5 mins. then flip.
-Continue to brown for another 5 mins.
-If needed, you can place meatballs on their sides as well to brown a little.
-In an large baking dish, place all your meatballs and then cover with the gravy.
-Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
-If all of your meatballs do not fully get covered with the gravy, stir the meatballs after 30 mins to ensure all the meatballs are in the gravy at some point in the baking process.
-All done!
-Serve with your choice of sides.
